How to Help Dancers Perform Multiple Routines Back-to-Back

With competition season in full swing, many dancers are preparing for the challenge of performing multiple routines back-to-back. It’s a true test of stamina, focus, and quick transitions—but with the right preparation, your dancers can shine every time they step on stage!

With our next competition just over a week away, we know many of you are deep into rehearsals—whether it’s with us or for another upcoming event. So, how can you help your dancers stay energised, focused, and performance-ready?

Here are 5 essential tips to make sure they give 100% in every routine:

đź’Ş 1. Build Stamina in Rehearsals

Practice how you perform! Dancers should be rehearsing full-out, with minimal breaks, to mimic the energy demands of competition day.
Run multiple routines back-to-back in rehearsal so dancers get used to the pacing and physical endurance required.

đź‘— 2. Master the Quick Change

Rushed costume changes can create stress and throw off focus. Help your dancers prepare by encouraging them to:

  • Practice fast changes during rehearsal
  • Use layering techniques (like tights under trousers)
  • Organise costumes clearly backstage so everything is easy to grab and go!

🥗 3. Fuel Their Energy Levels

Proper nutrition and hydration can make a huge difference in performance quality.
Recommend:

  • Slow-burning snacks like bananas, oat bars, and wholegrain crackers
  • Plenty of water before, during, and after dancing
  • Avoiding heavy, greasy, or overly sugary snacks that can lead to an energy crash

🧠 4. Keep Their Minds Focused

Switching between styles (like lyrical to commercial) takes quick mental adjustment.
Support dancers with tools like:

  • Breathing techniques to stay calm and grounded
  • Mental cues or key phrases to shift into the next routine’s mindset
  • Staying present and focused on one performance at a time

🌟 5. Remind Them to Give Their All – Every Time!

It’s tempting to hold back in early routines to conserve energy, but remind dancers:
The best way to build stamina is to go all in, every single time.
Each performance is an opportunity—treat it like it’s the only one.
